Good grooming, involves the whole man. More than just the clothes he wears or the way he cuts his hair, grooming reflects nothing more and nothing less than the image a man has of himself and his ability to project that image to the world around him. Given the swiftly ever-changing working landscape of today, it is not always easy to be up-to-the-minute and relevant. It is the aim of this feature to simplify the task, to explain the alternatives that exist in such glorious profusion, and to assist each individual to choose from the massive amounts of products and services available to them. In short, the combination of a healthy grooming regime and facial procedures is soon becoming as appropriate and personal to him as his signature.
In the past few years, there has been much talk about a menswear grooming revolution. But thus far, the reports of the American male have been highly exaggerated. Most of us still want to be well dressed and well groomed. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that all this talk and publicity has made most men aware that what they are wearing and how they are groomed reflects some kind of aesthetic statement. In modern times, men are looking into the mirror and wondering if they could appear fresh-faced or dare I say it; younger. At present, grooming awareness is in the air and not just the rarified levels of a few metropolitan types. Even more dramatic then the news in clothing is the transformation that has come over the male grooming scene. Most explosive has been the change in attitude towards skin.
The pressures on the executive in the big companies today- the continual travel, has put a premium on youth; the man past thirty-five knows he has to continue to look young and vital or the risk of being bypassed for promotion. Also, the growing divorce rate has had its effect, too. A divorced man, dating again, wants to look younger, more interesting; he prefers to change his image when he considers changing his life. These various influences affect most men. If you speak with the majority of men today, they will perk up when you talk about grooming and how to appear dressed for successful with a youthful glow. We now see grooming as a vital part in reconstructing our image.
Leaving aside the possibility of a mustache and beard, the skin itself can radiate health and vitality. The key to healthy skin, almost all experts agree, is cleanliness. In short, upon rising in the morning, wash with mild soap and water. Shaving also cleans the surface of the skin, too. However abrasive it may be. When you come home at night, use a cleansing lotion.
As we soon enter into the second decade of the 21st century, more and more men are realizing the value of having regular facials as well as facial procedures. Some of the dermatologists report that almost half their clients are now men.
On a recent trip to Nashville, I paid a visit to the Spa at the JW Marriott Nashville. I was pleasantly surprised not only to learn that men are scheduling appointments in great numbers, but that their interest in skin care, therapeutic massage, body treatments, and the positive effects self-care provides has grown significantly.
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Because the Natura Bissé philosophy is one based on the fact that every skin type has its own needs, that there is no “one size fits all” skin care product, it’s imperative for us to carry a range of their products to ensure that we can deliver a customized skin care routine to each of our guests. The collections we carry include: Vitamin C, Essential Shock, The Cure, and The Diamond Collection. The Diamond collection is by far the most popular among our guests. The diamond products have a strong focus on fighting free radicals and firming the skin while also providing the utmost hydration that gives a luminous glow, and like their other products, is exemplary in producing visible, and often times, immediate results. Once our guests are introduced to the Natura Bissé line we tend to see many return that mention how pleased they are to “finally have found something that really works”. A large majority of our guests are on a fully personalized Natura Bissé skin care regimen that makes them feel confident with their skin and grateful for the time they chose to invest on their journey to improved health and wellness.
I recently has the privilege to speak with JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director Kendra Rice about why she chooses to work with Natura Bissé for men’s facials, What are the most frequently asked questions that men have with respect to skin care and how important is healthy skin in relation to work atmosphere!
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; Talk to Forbes about the history, launch date and DNA of your Spa and why you choose to work with Natura Bissé for your men’s facials.
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Spa by JW opened its doors on July 12, 2018 with the intention of providing a wellness experience unlike anything in Nashville today, from treatments exclusive to our location down to the high quality of ingredients being used in those treatments. Our team consists of 17 people who are exceedingly passionate about all things wellness including skin care, therapeutic massage, body treatments, and the positive effects self-care provides to all who practice it. The Spa’s Director, Kendra Rice, has worked previously with the Natura Bissé line and was adamant about bringing this results-driven product line to her new role here in Nashville. Because of the varying lines that are offered through Natura Bissé, we decided to integrate these products into our facials. Our most popular facial is the Personal Retreat Facial which is a fully customized treatment that pulls from various lines of Natura Bissé in order to specifically address any conditions our guests may be faced with such as sun-damaged skin, dry or oily skin, scarred or acne-prone skin, etc. Additionally, the Natura Bissé lines are rather neutral in their scent, which is an aspect of the spa experience that is important to some men.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; What are the most frequently asked questions that men have with respect to skin care and how do you address these questions?
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: We’ve found that, in large part, men’s attitudes are changing when it comes to recognizing the importance of skin care and well-being, and as a direct result, we’re seeing more interest in men wanting to receive facials, both those who travel and local residents as well. Most commonly, men are wondering what they should use to cleanse and moisturize every day? Additionally, they express a desire to take care of their skin but request tips on how to minimize the amount of time do so. They also love tips on which specific products to use. During our consultations, we make certain to listen closely to their concerns and the cues they give within these descriptions regarding the type of environment they are regularly immersed in, from there, we assist with providing a realistic routine and basic education to help them best achieve the results they are seeking.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; Why is it important for men to be have skin care regiment?
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Our skin is the largest organ of the body, our first line of defense, and it’s important to keep it protected. Men have specific needs and concerns that are going to be different than women. Men tend to have thicker skin, which equates to more oil meaning they need to be cleansing more often, because of this, they require more collagen as well. But it’s not all bad news! A lot of men regularly shave, which actually helps to slow the aging process down slightly. However, men are less likely to wear SPF, a misstep that slows down collagen production, a decrease that starts to take place in our thirties. It’s very important to find a skincare routine tailored to your unique skin to see the best results.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; In your words, What is a good skin care regiment
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: The best skin care regiment is going to be one that is tailored just for you – to address your specific conditions, environment, such as altitude, humidity, pollution, etc. Everyone’s skin is different, and there are many things that effect our skin: our environment changes, our hormones change, our moods and stressors change, these all play a large part in the constant changing of our skin.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; How important is healthy skin in relation to work atmosphere.
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Taking time for ourselves is important and something simple that we can do to make us feel better. We feel more confident and healthy when we both look and feel good. When we take the time to regularly cleanse our skin, exfoliate, or apply a mask, we’re not only taking care of our skin, we’re reconnecting to ourselves. Wellness and self-care is not a trend, and have singlehandedly made skin care more accessible to men as a way to feel confident. When we take the time for ourselves and our skin, we feel better walking into work, or going into a meeting, because we look and feel good.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; In your words, what are men seeking today in skin care?
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Confidence isn’t gender specific and men just like women want their skin to look and feel good. When we perform facials on men, they regularly ask the same questions as females and have similar desires for their skin to look young and rejuvenated. The only difference being that men are beginning to seek education in regards to skin care now more than ever before.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; Talk to Forbes in detail about the facials you perform and why it is important for consumers to be aware of your spa and Natura Bissé?
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: At Spa by JW, we offer five unique Natura Bissé facials and every facial we perform is different. With every treatment, we aim to get our guests connected to the treatment as best as possible, we do this by actively listening to their concerns and asking guests to connect to their mind and body by taking a deep breath in and to work on feeling “weightless” by relaxing their limbs one at a time. This allows our guests the chance to completely relax which is then carried on through the duration of their treatment. Then we move on to one of the most popular elements of any facial which is the massage. At Spa by JW, we use lymphatic draining massage techniques to boost the effect of the facial which helps the skin detox, create good circulation, which results in healthy, firm looking skin. How skin care is applied is just as important as the skin ingredients being used.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; Where is the product made and why?
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Ricardo Fisas, the founder and mastermind behind Natura Bissé, developed the line in Barcelon, Spain, which is where it’s headquartered and manufactured to this day.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; You have the floor: Talk to my viewers about why they should try Natura Bissé?
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: One of Natura Bisse’s main philosophy is that your skin care must adapt to you. Each of their collections are unique and can be tailored perfectly to your skins needs, a compelling reason for why we believe it’s the Official Skin Care Brand of Forbes Travel Guide. This skin care line is one of the most exclusive luxury brands in the world and has an extremely high concentration of effective ingredients which helps create truly unique treatments, such as the Personal Retreat Facial. Natura Bissé uses natural amino acids in all of their products to promote firmer and healthier skin, and within each collection, different effective ingredients targeted to exactly what may be ailing one’s skin. We love Natura Bissé for the philosophy they ascribe to that “no skin is the same”, and we shouldn’t be putting skin into categories but rather looking at skin as ever-changing by the effects of our environment, stresses, and hormones.
Joseph DeAcetis: Question here; In your words, what is on the horizon in mens grooming and skincare.
JW Marriott Nashville’s Spa Director, Kendra Rice: Men will continue to become more interested in skin care and grooming due to this wave of change we’re seeing wash over society as a whole. Toxic masculinity is a thing of the past and as men’s perception of skin care and grooming change as a result of being more open with their desire for well-being and seeing others take part in that as well, the more they’ll spend time educating themselves and wanting to receive treatments that will help change how they look and feel. The idea that advanced skin care treatments used to treat aging are only targeted to women is antiquated. It’s through gender-neutral treatments like facials and the overall importance of prioritizing one’s health and wellness that skin care overall is becoming more commonplace among men and more accessible in general.
